FAQ

  • What is Physical Therapy/PT? Physical therapy or PT is the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal problems. This means that the physical therapist (or PT) will do a through evaluation to determine exactly where your pain is coming from and why. The "why" could be inflammation, tight muscles, weak muscles, or a joint that isn't moving properly? Talk to your physical therapist about goals you have; the rehabilitation for someone who wants to play golf with an injured shoulder is not the same as someone who doesn't use their shoulder for sports! In addition physical therapists are trained in recognizing conditions that warrant a visit to the doctor.
    • Physical Therapists are also trained in rehabilitating people after acute injuries and surgery. On your first visit after surgery, your physical therapist will do a brief evaluation to see how you are doing, and then design a specific rehabilitation program to get you moving and feeling better while protecting the healing structures.

  • What happens in a PT visit? On your first PT visit, the physical therapist needs to do an evaluation. This means that your therapist will test your muscle flexibility and strength, look at your posture, and see how your joints are moving. After the evaluation, the therapist will design a specific program. The program is designed to decrease your pain, and then to correct the problems that brought it on, to make sure it doesn't come back. Physical therapists use manual therapy, exercises, and modalities like ice, ultrasound, or electrical stimulation.

  • Do I need a referral from my primary doctor? No you do not. Colorado is a direct access state for physical therapy. We do work closely with your physician, but their referral is not required.

  • What should I bring to a PT visit? You should bring a prescription from your doctor if you have one, X-rays if you have them, the MRI or CAT scan report if you have it, and your insurance card. You should also wear loose clothing that allows the therapist to access the injured part of your body; a tank top is a good idea if you have a problem with your shoulder, and shorts are best for knee problems.

  • How can I pay for PT? APMC accepts cash, checks, and both Visa and Mastercard.

  • What if I have physical therapy questions? You can call APMC at 303.477.5303 with any questions you have about coming in for physical therapy, or questions about an injury.

  • What should I do in an emergency? If you are in severe pain and are not able to move, a doctor's office or the emergency room is the best place for you. Severe pain is a sign of a serious problem, and a doctor should make sure there is nothing seriously wrong before you come in to APMC. If you are not sure if you need to see a doctor or not, you can schedule an appointment and the physical therapist can evaluate your condition and decide if you would benefit from physical therapy or if you need to see a doctor first.
